SMMC Birthing Suite - Services

Birthing Suite Services

York County’s only Level II neonatal intensive care
SMMC is the only hospital in York County that provides care to newborns at this advanced level of care. As parents, this means that if your baby is born premature or sick and requires specialized care and monitoring after birth, he or she can be cared for here by one of our pediatricians and our specialty trained nurses just steps from your room. You can rest assured knowing that your baby is in the best hands around and that we are committed to providing a nurturing, nonstressful environment for your baby to heal and grow.

Doula service referral available
The word Doula (pronounced Doo-lah) is taken from the Greek word referring to an experienced woman helping another woman in the childbirth process. It is the goal of the doula to support the parents in achieving their goals of a safe, positive birth experience. Parents can be connected with a certified doula in the community who will contact them to arrange this service.

24-hour pain management services
Your baby may arrive at any time of the day or night, so our pain management staff are available around the clock to meet your needs. Obstetrical pain management including intrathecals and epidurals are delivered by trained anesthesiologists who are available 24 hours a day. At SMMC, the staff of physicians and nurses will work to provide you with a safe and secure experience whether you want a pain free or medication free birth process.

24-hour helpline
We've set up a 24-hour helpline answered by nurses to help you before and after your baby's birth. The hotline number is: (207) 283-7350.

Lactation Consultants
Breastfeeding is identified as the ideal method of feeding and nurturing infants by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Breastfeeding is natural but not instinctive. A certified lactation consultant is a specialist in breastfeeding with the skills necessary to help families from birth through weaning. So no matter whether this is your first time breastfeeding or you have breastfed before, or if you are unsure what to expect and have questions, our lactation consultants will meet with you or talk with you as needed. Even after you go home, the consultants are available to breastfeeding mothers through the Nursing Mothers Support Service, which includes a pump rental and purchasing program, introduction to breastfeeding education, and a 24-hour “warm line” at 283-7335. Simply call, if there is no one there when you call, leave a message and we’ll give you a call right back.

Candlelight Celebration dinner
Enjoy this opportunity to celebrate while your baby is cared for by our nurses. Meanwhile, we will serve you a romantic Candlelight Celebration dinner with a choice of Filet Mignon, Chicken Cordon Bleu or Baked Haddock followed by a dessert of cheesecake, chocolate cake or carrot cake.

Comfort Measures/Whirlpools
Women’s perceptions of labor pain vary, so do their choices about pain management and comfort measures. Warm baths in one of our two relaxing whirlpools, showers, massage, position changes, relaxation techniques and the use of the birthing ball all are offered as options to allow you to cope with labor pain and experience the positive sensations of birth.

Prenatal Clinic
SMMC’s Prenatal Clinic offers a confidential office setting and provides a full range of services during pregnancy and after your delivery. Care is provided by a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner in collaboration with our Obstetricians on staff. This service is a great resource for expecting parents who have yet to choose a physician, receive medicaid or those without insurance. Please call us at (207) 283-7333 for an appointment.

Follow-up home visits
Postpartum Health Promotion Visit offered to all new parents within 3 days of discharge through SMMC Visiting Nurses. An SMMC obstetrical nurse will visit you and your newborn in your home to do a routine exam, weight check, provide you with health education, and answer any questions you have at that time.
